U.S. National Toboggan Championships - Camden, Maine

Christmas by the SeaFebruary can be a bit of a drab time. You might find yourself bored: tired of winter, in need of some sunshine. Or maybe you just need a little adrenaline boost. You can find that boost at the U.S. National Toboggan Championships in Camden, Maine. Whether you participate for a huge adrenaline boost, or you simply go as a spectator for a small one, you are sure to be rejuvenated by hot cocoa and the kinship of fellow Maine sledders.

The U.S. National Toboggan Championships began in 1991 as part of the Camden Snow Bowl. For over twenty years, daredevils have been shooting down the iced-over, 400-foot long, wooden toboggan chute with a vertical incline of over 70 feet. Toboggan Riders can go as fast as 45 mph as they zip down the hillside onto Hosmer Pond.

Christmas by the SeaMore than 400 teams compete and the event attracts a crowd upwards of 5000 people annually. Participants come from all over the country, but many locals and Mainers compete. In fact, anyone can compete. This annual event is held the first weekend in February at the Camden Snow Bowl. Contenders compete in two-, three-, and four-person teams. For information about how to register, visit www.camdensnowbowl.com.

Be sure you have a catchy name planned because you’ll be competing with folks like: "3 Meatballs", "Chute I’m Out of Beer", "Four Wingnuts", "Gravity Gurus", "Runaway Brides", "The Bucket List Gang", "The Soggy Boggin’ Boys", and "Sled Man Walking". Not only are these teams brave and fast, they are also clever. And what do you get, if you win? A nice shiny trophy. And fame, of course, because you will be, after all, a National Champion.
