Penobscot Island Air Destinations

Matinicus

The most distant of the inhabited Penobscot Bay islands, Matinicus lies about 20 miles offshore. It has a working harbor, a rocky eastern shore, and a U.S. post office.

Criehaven

Criehaven is known as the "Island of Lobsters" and is the former home of writer Elisabeth Ogilvie—and the inspiration for her "Tide Trilogy."

Vinalhaven

With its active summer community and busy lobster fishery, Vinalhaven is one of the best known Penobscot Bay islands—and one of the largest (about nine miles long and five miles wide). Historically known for its granite-quarrying industry, the island offers restaurants, shops, a museum, numerous recreational activities, and year-round accommodations.

Islesboro

Islesboro is a ten-mile island town in Waldo County famous for its well-established summer colony; it's home to Dark Harbor, Warren Island State Park, bed & breakfasts, and vacation rentals and offers boating, kayaking, and hiking trails.

North Haven

North Haven has both an active working population and summer population, gift shops, restaurants, a general store, and a number of vacation accommodations.

Swans Island

Swans Island is a large, remote island near Bar Harbor that has few mainland amenities; lobstering is the chief occupation among its residents.

Stonington

Named for its large quarrying operations, Stonington has an economy that centers around fishing and vacation-industry interests. It also has a number of nature preserves.

Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor is a well-known coastal destination on Mount Desert Island first settled in the 1700s. The town has numerous businesses, vacation spots, and natural attractions—including Acadia National Park.

Belfast

Historically a shipbuilding community, railroad town, and poultry center, Belfast is the county seat of Waldo County and has in recent years experienced a rejuvenated economy.

Rockland

Calling itself the "Lobster Capital of the World," the City of Rockland is the center of commerce and county seat of Knox County. Its lobster fishery—along with those of nearby towns—is famous; historically it was home to a vital lime-quarrying industry from which it got its name.

Isle au Haut

Isle au Haut is a traditional year-round island community, home to fishing and cottage industry. The island is approximately 12 square miles, five of which are in Acadia National Park, famous for ocean vistas and hiking. Our amphibious floatplane provides access via Long Pond - a mile-long, body of fresh water.

Portland / Bangor pick-ups / drop offs for connecting flights.

We can arrange short-range passenger charters for your special needs in our Cessna 206 and 207 aircraft. We can also make arrangements for all of your long-distance air charter needs beyond Knox County Regional Airport. This would include the flights to/from an island airport to meet the connecting air charter jet or turboprop aircraft. We coordinate all your ground transportation needs from the Knox County Regional Airport as well.

Our Fleet

We operate Cessna Stationair 206 & 207 aircraft.*

The Cessna 206s/207s are perfect for service to the island runways. A Cessna 206 has an empty weight of approximately 2,000 lbs., and can carry 1,600 lbs. The 206 also has excellent short field performance to get you and your gear safely and comfortably in and out of the island runways.

The Cessna 206 can fly up to five passengers and their baggage to the Penobscot Bay Islands in about 10 minutes from Knox County Regional Airport. This might be an attractive alternative to a one- to two-hour boat or ferry trip.

The Cessna 207 is four feet longer than a 206. It can carry the same total weight as a 206, but much more volume. The forward fuselage was lengthened so that a forward baggage compartment could be added behind the engine. The passenger cabin was also lengthened in order to add another row of full-size seats for a total capacity of a pilot and six passengers. There is also a right forward door for easier access to the right-side seats. The 207 has the same cargo door as the 206, but it is located further aft of the wing, adjacent to the same set of rear windows used for the 206.

* Important Passenger Information

The amount we load into a plane (bags or persons) is always determined by the pilot. Because of this, how much we take will vary from pilot to pilot, and of course day to day based on wind, heat and humidity. Typically, we will take up to 3 passengers in and out of the islands, depending on how much luggage they have.
