Visitors wander miles of trails along waterfront and through woodlands, gazing at thousands of plant species, rock walls, trees, and wind-driven sculptures. The Botanical Gardens have been called one of Maine’s top three attractions.
The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens opened in June of 2007 after 16 years of planning and planting. Today, patrons are invited to visit the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses, the Rose and Perennial Garden, the Haney Hillside Garden, the Great Lawn and Ledge Garden, or the Vayo Meditation Garden. New in 2010 is the Children’s Garden. You could spend 15 minutes here, or all day. You can walk for hours, or sit on one of the park’s many benches and read in the ocean breeze..
The Kitchen Garden Café offers fresh fare, made from local and organic ingredients, including some ingredients from their own onsite garden. The menu changes frequently based on the season. The Gardens Gift Shop offers hundreds of garden-related books, tools, Maine-made items, gourmet foods, holiday décor, jewelry, scarves and other gifts. The Gift Shop also features a children’s section. The shop is open daily from the first of April through the end of October.
The Gardens are also home to art exhibits. The Gardens extends invitations to artists to exhibit work in both the Visitor Center and on the grounds.
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is open 7 days a week from 9 until 5 year-round. The Gardens are closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Complementary docent-led tours are offered at 11 and 1 every Tuesday and Thursday from spring until fall. Admission to the Gardens is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $6 for children. Children under the age of 3 are free. Reduced rates are available for large groups, and for school field trips. Admission from January through March is free.
